A 5-Day Guided Expedition in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains

Itinerary for Climbing Mount Toubkal (5 Days)

Day 1: Marrakech – Asni – Aguersioual (1650m) – Tizi Oudid Pass (2220m) – Tizi Oussem (1950m)

Our journey begins at 8:00 AM as we drive from Marrakech to the mountain village of Aguersioual, where we meet our local team of muleteers. After preparing our luggage, we begin our hike with a 2-hour ascent to the Tizi Oudid Pass (2,220m), followed by a gentle descent into the Azzaden Valley.
Ascent: +550m | Descent: -270m | Walking duration: approx. 5 hours. Overnight stay in a local guesthouse in Tizi Oussem.

Day 2: Tizi Oussem (1950m) – M’zik Pass (2450m) – Aremd (2000m)

Leaving the village behind, we ascend the trail towards the M’zik Pass (2,450m), enjoying fine views across the Azzaden Valley. We then descend into the lush Imlil Valley, famous for its terraced apple and walnut orchards.
Ascent: +500m | Descent: -450m | Walking duration: approx. 4.5 hours. Overnight stay in a local guesthouse in Aremd.

Day 3: Aremd (2000m) – Toubkal Refuge (3207m)

Today, our trail for Climbing Mount Toubkal climbs steadily from the village of Aremd, passing the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, up to the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207m in the high mountains.
Ascent: +1207m | Walking duration: approx. 5 hours. Overnight stay at the Toubkal Refuge.

Day 4: Toubkal Refuge (3207m) – Ascent of Mount Toubkal (4167m) – Return to Refuge

Our ascent of Mount Toubkal commences early at 5:00 AM for optimal climbing conditions. Reaching the summit of Jbel Toubkal (4,167m) rewards us with a 360-degree panoramic view over the High Atlas peaks, the Sirwa Massif, and the Marrakech plains. After celebrating on top, we descend back to the refuge.
Ascent: +960m | Descent: -960m | Walking duration: approx. 6 hours. Overnight stay at the refuge.

Day 5: Toubkal Refuge (3207m) – Descent to Imlil (1750m) – Transfer to Marrakech

After breakfast at 8:30 AM, we descend along the mule track past Sidi Chamharouch (2,250m) down to Imlil (1,750m) for lunch. We then meet our driver for the return transfer to Marrakech.
Descent: -1450m | Walking duration: 4 hours | Drive duration: 1.5 hours.
