Itinerary for the 6-Days Desert Hike Morocco

Day 1: Marrakech – Ouarzazate – M’Hamid – Ras Nkhal

After breakfast, we embark on a journey toward Ouarzazate, crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at an altitude of 2,260 meters. We enjoy panoramic mountain views before continuing through the Ait Saoun Pass into the Draa Valley, eventually reaching M’Hamid El Ghizlane where we meet our team of camel drivers. An introductory one-hour walk leads us to our campsite among the dunes of Ras Nkhal.
Drive duration: approx. 7 hours. Walking time: 1 hour. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 2: Ras Nkhal Palm Grove – Sidi Naji

Following the riverbed of Oued Draa amidst palm groves and tamarisk trees, we trek through stunning desert landscapes. Crossing the stony plateau of Sidi Naji, we reach the golden sand dunes of the same name. We set up our campsite among the dunes for a peaceful evening.
Walking time: approx. 5 hours. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 3: Sidi Naji – Erg Zahar Dunes

We leave Sidi Naji to venture deeper into vast open desert expanses. Rolling sand dunes dominate the horizon as far as the eye can see until we reach the imposing dunes of Erg Zahar. We explore the towering dunes overlooking the Draa Valley.
Walking time: approx. 5.5 hours. Overnight stay in tents among the dunes.

Day 4: Erg Zahar Dunes – Erg Ait Ounir

After breakfast, we head north towards Ait Ounir. A magnificent day awaits across diverse Saharan landscapes including sand dunes, tamarisk trees, and desert acacias. In the evening, we enjoy traditional Berber music around the campfire.
Walking time: approx. 5.5 hours. Overnight stay in tents or under the stars.

Day 5: Erg Ait Ounir – Ras Nkhal (M’Hamid)

We ascend the dunes of Erg Ait Ounir and conclude our desert trek back at Ras Nkhal, located at the entrance to the M’Hamid palm grove — an ideal setting for our final night in the desert.
Walking time: approx. 5.5 hours. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 6: Ras Nkhal – Zagora – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After a short morning walk, we meet our transfer vehicle near M’Hamid. The return journey follows the scenic Draa Valley back to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, arriving in the late afternoon.
Walking time: 1 hour. Drive distance: approx. 460 km.
