Itinerary for the 6-Day Sahara Desert Trek Morocco

Day 1: Marrakech – Ouarzazate – Zagora – Draa Valley – Oulad Amer

We depart early from Marrakech towards Ouarzazate, crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m). After lunch in Ouarzazate, we continue towards the Draa Valley, famous for its vast palm groves and historic kasbahs. We descend along the valley until we reach the village of Oulad Amer, where we meet our camel team and set up our camp. Overnight stay in tents in the heart of the desert.
Drive duration: approx. 7 hours. Overnight in desert camp.

Day 2: Oulad Amer – Bougaiwar – Zaouiat Sidi Salah – Tiraf Dunes

After loading our luggage onto the camels, we begin our desert walking trek. We pass through lush palm groves and traditional mud-brick desert villages, crossing a desert plateau that leads to the village of Zaouiat Sidi Salah. There, we enjoy lunch and a rest under the shade of palm trees. An hour’s walk in the afternoon brings us to our camp at the Tiraf Dunes, where we gather firewood for the evening campfire.
Walking time: approx. 5 hours. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 3: Tiraf Dunes – Mount Tidri – Erg Sahel

We begin the day by climbing Mount Tidri to admire a panoramic view over the Draa oasis and riverbed. Crossing a vast rocky desert plateau (Reg), we arrive at our campsite nestled among the golden sand dunes of Erg Sahel. In the late afternoon, we gather firewood and prepare traditional nomadic sand-baked bread.
Walking time: approx. 4.5 hours. Overnight stay in tents among the dunes.

Day 4: Erg Sahel – Reguabi Dunes

We continue our exploration across varied desert terrain, walking through sand dunes, acacia trees, and desert tamarisks. We reach the Reguabi Dunes in the afternoon, where we pitch our tents for another peaceful night under the Saharan stars.
Walking time: approx. 4 hours. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 5: Reguabi Dunes – Bounou – Talha Dunes

On our final full day of desert hiking, we trek towards the palm groves of Reguabi near where the Draa River gradually fades into the Sahara sands. We visit the ancient fortified village of Bounou, constructed with traditional sun-dried clay bricks. We set up our final campsite in the dunes near the village of Talha.
Walking time: approx. 4 hours. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 6: Talha Dunes – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

We enjoy a short morning walk to meet our vehicle, where we bid farewell to our local camel drivers. We begin our return transfer to Marrakech along the Draa Valley, with scenic stops along the way. After lunch in Ouarzazate, we arrive back in Marrakech in the late afternoon.
Drive duration: approx. 7 to 8 hours return transfer.
