Itinerary of the 4-Day Mount M’Goun Trek in Morocco (4071m)
Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Bougmez Valley – Azibs n’Ikkis (2300m)
We will transfer to Azilal, the last town before embarking on a mountain road that leads us into the heart of the Central High Atlas, specifically the valleys of Ait Abbas and the joyful Ait Bougmez. Our 4-Day Mount M’Goun Trek starts with a walk through the traditional Berber villages of the Arous valley, featuring classic adobe architecture. After a 3-hour hike ascending 700 meters, we reach the sheepfolds of Ikkis, where we set up camp for the night at an altitude of 2,300m.
Day 2: Azibs n’Ikkis (2300m) – Tarkeddit Pass (3400m) – Tarkeddit Plateau (2900m)
Ascending via a scenic mule path, we reach the mountain pass of Tizi n’Oughri (3,400 m) to enjoy a panoramic view of the vast northern slope of the M’Goun Massif, the Tarkeddit plateau, and surrounding peaks. After approximately 5 hours and a 1,100m ascent, we descend for about 1.5 hours to our campsite near the sources of the Tassaout River (2,900 m). The rest of the afternoon is for relaxation. Overnight in tents.
Day 3: Tarkeddit Plateau – Summit Ascent of Mount M’Goun (4071m) – Oulilimt (2700m)
Waking up at 4:00 AM, we begin our summit push around 5:00 AM, following the long ridge line of Ighil M’Goun until reaching the summit of Mount M’Goun (4,071 m). The view from the top encompasses the entire Central High Atlas range, the Dadès Valley, and Jebel Saghro to the south. After an 8-hour trek (ascending 1,168m and descending 1,368m), we reach our campsite near the sheepfolds of Oulilimt (2,700 m). An alternative path with the mule team is available for anyone opting out of the summit climb. Overnight in tents.
Day 4: Oulilimt (2700m) – Ait Imi Pass (2905m) – Ait Bougmez Valley – Transfer to Marrakech
Leaving the nomadic pasturelands behind, we ascend to the Ait Imi pass (2,905 m) for a final panoramic view of the surrounding peaks. We then descend to the Ait Imi spring for lunch in the shade. After saying goodbye to our muleteer team, we board our vehicle for the drive back to Marrakech. Total duration: 6 hours of walking and a 5-hour drive (ascent 650m, descent 1,000m).
