Trekking Ait Bougmez Valley and Ascent of Djebel M’goun (4068m)
A 4-day Ascent of Djebel M’goun starting from the Aït Bougmez valley, the happy valley, passing by the sheepfolds of Azib N’Ikkis before arriving at the plateau of Tarkeddit at the foot of M’goun, where we’d be meeting the nomads who come with their flocks (goats, sheep, camels) from the High Atlas’ valleys. The climb of the M’goun opens new horizons to the whole Atlas, and in the south, to the valley of Dades, Jebel Sargho and the Saharan expanses

Itinerary of Ascent of Djebel M’goun
Day 1: Marrakesh – Ait Bougmez Valley – Azibs Ikkis (2300m)
Transfer to Azilal, the last town before taking a small road into the deep valleys of the central High Atlas, the valley of Ait Abbas and the happy valley of Ait Bougmez. We will meet with the muleteer’s team in its first village named Agouti. Our trek in the M’goun Massif begins with going through the beautiful Berber villages of the Arous valley with the typical adobe architecture. A Night in tents near sheepfolds of Arous is in the program, after a 3h walk, 2500m, 700m of ascending.
Day 2: Azibs n’ Ikkis (2300m) – Tarkeddit Pass (3400m) – Tarkeddit plateau (2900m)
We ascend by the mule path that leads us to the col of Tizi n’Oughri (3400 m). Here you can witness a panoramic view of the vast northern slope of the M’Goun Massif, Tarkeddit’s plateau and the surrounding mountain peaks. Then a 1h30 descent to our camp, set near the sources of Tassaout (2900 m). We rest for the remainder of the afternoon. Night in tents. Duration: 5H30 walk. Altitude difference: 1050m ascend and 500m descent.
Day 3: Plateau Tarkeddit – Ascent of Djebel M’goun (4,068m) – Oulilimt (2700m)
Waking up around 4am, the departure is set around 5am to join the long ridge line of Ighil M’Goun, which we will follow to the top of mount M’goun (4,068 m). A breathtaking view of the whole mountains of the Central High Atlas and, in the south, the Dades Valley, Massif Sarhro. We descend by the path in a corridor, to reach the camp near the sheepfolds D’Oulilimt (2700 m, 8H walk, 1168 m of ascension and 1368 m of descent NB: for those not wanting to ascent mount M’goun, they can follow the path with the muleteers. Night in tents.
Day 4: Oulilimt (2600m) – Ait Imi pass 2905 m – The valley Ait Bougmez – Transfer to Marrakesh
We leave this area, that’s frequented by families of nomads with their herds. We ascend to the colof Ait Imi (2905 m). We can enjoy a panoramic view of the colof Ait Imi, the surrounding mountains and the M’goun Massif, then descent to Ait Imi water source, where we’d be having lunch in the shade. After saying our goodbyes to the muleteers’ team, we’d be taking the road to Marrakech. 6H walk. 5h drive. 650 m of ascending and 1000 m descend.
