This 5-day Mount M’Goun Ascent Trek takes you on a remarkable adventure to reach the summit. Your journey begins in the picturesque Ait Bougmez Valley, located in the High Atlas Mountains and affectionately known as the “Happy Valley.” This lush valley is celebrated for its natural beauty and warm Berber hospitality. Along the way, you will pass through traditional villages where you can meet local inhabitants and learn about their customs and way of life.
On the final evening of the Mount M’Goun Ascent Trek, you will stay in a traditional guesthouse, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the valley — a perfect conclusion to a memorable mountain adventure.
Itinerary of 5-Day Mount M’goun Ascent Trek
Day 1 : Marrakech – Ait Bouguemez Valley (1750m) – Trek Departure – Overnight in Tents at Ikkis N’Arous (2300m)
The first day of our journey starts with an early transfer from Marrakech to the charming town of Azilal, known as the gateway to the mountains. From there, we continue our journey to the Tizi N’Tirghist Pass (2600m) before reaching the peaceful and happy Ait Bougmez Valley. Upon arrival, we meet our muleteer team and enjoy a delicious lunch. We then begin our ascent, trekking up the Arous Valley towards the Ikkis n’Arous berber. This day involves about 5 and a half hours of driving and 2 and a half hours of trekking, with an elevation gain of 500 meters. At night, we set up camp in tents for a well-deserved rest. 8 km.
Day 2 : Ikkis N’Arous (2250m) – Tarkedit Pass (3400m) – Tarkedit (2900m)
The second day of our adventure continues with an ascent towards Tarkedit Pass, located at an altitude of 3400 meters. Along the way, we stop several times to admire the magical view of the Mgoun Range and the summit of Mgoun, which reaches 4068 meters above sea level. We then descend for about an hour to the Tarkedit Plateau, a vast plateau frequented by the Nomads. This day’s trek lasts about 5 and a half hours and involves an ascent of 1100 meters and a descent of 500 meters. At night, we rest again in tents. 13 km.
Day 3 : Tarkadit – M’Goun Summit (4071m) – Izabinne Shepherd Hut (2600m)
The third day holds a particularly intense stage, with about 9 hours of trekking ahead. We climb up to the ridge, offering spectacular panoramic views up to the summit of M’goun, the rooftop of the Central High Atlas. From up there, we will be dazzled by the splendid view of the entire M’Goun Massif and its distant valleys, including the Draa Valley and Dades Valley. A long descent through magnificent landscapes will finally bring us back to our campsite. In total, this day involves an ascent of 1200 meters and a descent of 1470 meters. We will spend the night in tents after covering approximately 22 km.
Day 4 : Izabinne Shepherd Hut (2600m) – Bouberden Pass (3100m) – Timit
The fourth day will be an opportunity to meet nomads with their families, accompanied by their herds. We head towards the Bouberden Pass, reaching an altitude of 3100 meters, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and a rear view of Mgoun. A long descent will then take us to the Ait Bougmez Valley, where we will enjoy a lunch near the juniper forest. After about an additional 1 and a half hours of descent, we will reach our guesthouse in the village of Timit. This day’s trek lasts about 6 and a half hours and involves an ascent of 500 meters and a descent of 1350 meters. 21 km.
Day 5 : Transfer from the Happy Ait Bougmez Valley – Ouzoud Waterfalls – Marrakech
On the last day, we will take a taxi to the small town of Azilal. A visit to the famous Ouzoud Waterfalls is planned, followed by a lunch at a small local restaurant near the waterfalls. After this excursion, we will resume our journey to Marrakech, where we expect to arrive around 5 pm. This day involves about 5 hours of driving.
